Simmental Cow

Perfect Balance of Meat and Milk: Simmental Breed Characteristics and Breeding

What is a Simmental Cow?

Originating from Switzerland, the Simmental Cow is defined as a "dual-purpose" breed because of its high meat and milk yield. Being one of the most preferred breeds in Turkey, Simmental is known for its durability and docile nature.

Simmental cattle can easily adapt to harsh climatic conditions. Thanks to these characteristics, they are seen as a favorite by breeders in many regions of Anatolia. Especially their high meat-binding capacity is a great advantage for fatteners.

Physical Characteristics

Basic external characteristics that allow you to recognize Simmental cows:

  • Color: Yellow-white or red-white mottled. The head, lower parts of the legs and the tip of the tail are usually white.
  • Weight: Adult females can reach 600-800 kg, and bulls can reach 1100-1300 kg weight.
  • Muscle Structure: They have a fairly strong and muscular body structure.
  • Docility: They are quite calm and docile animals compared to other breeds.

Yield Characteristics: Meat and Milk Capacity

The Simmental breed provides profit to its breeder in terms of both milk and carcass meat. The protein and fat values of its milk are higher than those of the Holstein cow.

  • Milk Yield: They give an average of 5,000 - 7,000 liters of milk during the lactation period (305 days).
  • Milk Fat: The fat rate is between 4.0% and 4.2%.
  • Meat Yield: Daily live weight gain can reach 1200-1500 grams. The yield is around 60%.

💡 Breeding Tip

Longevity is high in Simmental cows. They are one of the most trouble-free breeds regarding fertility. However, since calves have a high probability of being born large, one should be prepared for difficult births.

Nutrition and Health

Simmentals have a high ability to benefit from pastures. However, for high yield, quality forage and a balanced ration are essential.

  1. Pasture Adaptation: They like to graze on hilly terrains and pastures.
  2. Disease Resistance: They are more resistant than many other dairy breeds, especially in terms of udder health (mastitis) and foot-and-nail health.

Why Choose Simmental?

Advantages of the Simmental breed for farmers:

  • Double Profit: You earn from both milk and male calves that are put into fattening.
  • Low Veterinary Cost: Because they are resistant to diseases, they cause fewer problems.
  • Long Productive Life: They stay in your herd for many years, reducing the depreciation cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Simmental or Holstein: which makes more sense?
If you are a giant enterprise focused only on milk, Holstein may make sense. However, if you want to have milk, keep your animal valuable, and have your male calf make money, Simmental is generally more profitable under Turkish conditions.
How many liters of milk do Simmental cows give?
You can get a daily average of 15-25 liters of yield. In the lactation total, many animals push 6,000 liters.
